Job Summary:

Student applicants are encouraged to follow up with the Department Contact listed above regarding the status of their submitted application. Student positions are filled each semester on a need-to-hire basis. Applicants are reviewed whenever the department has an immediate need to fill a vacancy; the review of applications typically ends once all available positions are filled.

Under the supervision of Technical Services staff, the Technical Services and Systems Student Employee will assist with the daily operation of the Technical Services Department. The Technical Services and Systems Student Employee performs a variety of essential tasks, including assisting with MeLCat (a statewide library resource sharing service) , checking in the library’s print magazines, processing new books for shelving, routinely checking the library’s database links to ensure access and usability, and providing support for collection development projects. This position is also responsible for maintaining the accuracy of all Technical Services student training materials, updating the new book carousel on the library’s webpage and participating in MeLCat training. This position supports Technical Services and Systems staff in providing access to library materials and resources and assists with critical projects, tasks, events and research as assigned.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities
Prepares MeL notices (paging slips), pulls requested items, and checks items out to borrowing libraries using Sierra INN Reach Function. Cancels MeL requests for missing or damaged items using Sierra Search / Holds Function. Packages items according to RIDES policies and guidelines. Unpacks MeL shipments, checks items in using Sierra Check-In Function and shelves items. Creates MeL bands for items requested by library patrons and emails notifications to patrons.

Checks library magazines in using Sierra Serials Checkin Function, processes and shelves. Maintains library magazine display shelving. Physically processes books for shelving including adhering call number labels, property stamping, spine taping, and affixing book jackets. Updates status in Sierra from “in processing” to “available”. Shelves new books.

Performs link checking for the library’s 145+ databases. Confirms access, search functionality, and ability to view and download articles, images, maps, or books from each database in three web browsers, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. Records results in a shared Excel document.

Assists with collection management projects as necessary, including pulling selected items, processing them for donation, and searching for missing items. Acts as the library student lead for these projects.

Updates student training materials including content for the Technical Services portion of the Student Employee Manual Lib Guide. Creates videos to add to the Student Employee Manual Lib Guide.

Maintains an inventory of regularly ordered supplies. Requests supplies for ordering as necessary. Cleans the office space weekly, including wiping down workstations, and vacuuming. Helps maintain and organize the storage room.

Updates the new book carousel on the library’s webpage and the student board in Technical Services.

Participates in MeLCat training opportunities offered through Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS).

Additional Position Requirements

• Proficient with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word and Excel
• Experience using internet browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, and Edge
• Ability to learn and utilize a library Integrated Library System, preferably or such as Sierra

Regular on campus presence is expected for all LCC employment. Any flexible work schedules and/or hybrid work schedules approved by the College are subject to change based on the needs of the LCC community.

Requirements for LCC Student Employment:

The primary purpose of student employment is to provide current LCC students the opportunity to acquire job skills and experiences during semesters in which they are attending classes as follows:
• Enrolled and actively attending the following total LCC credit hours by semester
     - Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 6.0 credits minimum (taken over 16-week period)
     - Summer Semester = 3.0 credits minimum (taken over 8-week period)
• 2.00 GPA minimum (unless it’s student's first semester of enrollment at LCC and/or granted approval to waive requirement from the Student Employment Coordinator)

Note: International students (i.e. F-1 visa holders w/ valid I-20 issued by LCC) must meet the following minimum enrollment requirements each semester, in order to maintain employment eligibility per United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USICS):
     - Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 12.0 credits min. (taken over 16-week period)
     - Summer Semester = 3.0 credits min. (taken over 8-week period)

Preferred Qualifications:
